What does it really mean to work with leftover fabrics? And why is it not always a cheaper solution – but rather an investment in sustainable craftsmanship?
Turning waste into treasure
Every year, huge amounts of textiles go to waste in the fashion and interior industries. Fabrics left over after production, sample collections, or wrong orders often cannot be used in large-scale factories – but they can be transformed into beautiful, unique products in smaller editions.
By working with leftover fabrics, we can reduce waste, make use of already produced resources, and at the same time create products with a story. Every piece of fabric carries a background – maybe it was a planned dress that was never sewn, or a length of fabric left over from an exclusive collection. At OMOM, we want to give them a new chance to be used.
Why does it cost more to use leftover fabrics?
Many believe that products made from leftover fabric should be cheaper since the material already exists. But in reality, it is the opposite. Here are some reasons why our small-scale collections with leftover fabrics rather justify a higher price:
-
Small-scale craftsmanship takes more time. Since each piece of fabric can be unique, extra time is required to adapt it according to the pattern; it simply requires more hands-on work from the artisans.
-
Limited editions = unique products. Unlike mass-produced garments and accessories, our products exist only in limited quantities. This makes them more exclusive and special and they are not made like mass production on an assembly line.
-
No large-scale production. Large factories can reduce costs through bulk orders of materials and streamlined processes. We instead work with small-scale production where every detail is given its time.
-
Sustainability is valuable. For us, it's not about creating the cheapest possible products, but about manufacturing with respect for both materials and craftsmanship. Choosing a cushion cover, a fabric bag, or a duvet cover from OMOM means you are investing in a more conscious choice.
