OMOM launches its first hemp products in the fall of 2024

OMOM lanserar sina första hampaprodukter under hösten 2024

At an organic fair in Malmö a few years ago, I met an enthusiastic hemp grower who told me about all its benefits. Since then, I have tried to find a partner who can produce beautiful hemp fabrics under responsible conditions. Since 2023, I have been in contact with a manufacturer in India who works with hemp; they are certified by the GOTS certification, which ensures both the working environment and the material. There is much to tell about hemp, and here we have compiled what we see as especially important.

Hemp is an excellent choice as a textile material for several reasons, and research supports its many benefits from both environmental and sustainability perspectives. Hemp is a very durable and strong fiber that resists wear better than many other textile materials, meaning garments and products made from hemp often have a longer lifespan. Additionally, the hemp plant requires minimal water, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers to grow, making it an environmentally friendly choice. Hemp can be grown without pesticides, reducing agriculture's negative impact on the environment, and it can be cultivated on the same soil year after year without depleting it, contributing to soil health and biodiversity. Furthermore, the hemp plant improves soil quality by reducing erosion and promoting biodiversity.

Another advantage of hemp is its versatility as a material. Hemp fibers can be used to create everything from coarse fabrics, used in furniture and building materials, to soft, lightweight fabrics used in clothing, making hemp useful in many areas of the textile industry. Hemp also has natural antimicrobial properties, which means it inhibits the growth of bacteria and mold. This makes hemp fabrics a hygienic option that can help reduce bad odors and increase the garment's lifespan. Hemp is also a naturally breathable material, meaning it allows air to pass through and helps regulate body temperature, making hemp clothing comfortable to wear, especially in warmer climates.

Hemp is a fast-growing crop that can be harvested several times a year, making it a resource-efficient plant. This fast-growing nature contributes to high production on a relatively small area, which is important in a time when sustainable production and efficient use of agricultural land are crucial. In summary, research shows that hemp is an excellent choice for those seeking a sustainable, versatile, and environmentally friendly textile material that offers both function and comfort.

In OMOM's first release of hemp products, there will be a fabric bag made of 100% hemp as well as a wonderfully fine sofa cushion made of 100% hemp. The spring collection will later include more home decor and accessories.

Well met!

Linda
